Ib Kofod-Larsen dining chairs
This is a rare and finely crafted set of eight dining chairs designed by Danish architect and designer Ib Kofod-Larsen, produced by Seffle Möbelfabrik in Sweden during the 1960s. These chairs exemplify the refined structural sensibility and organic minimalism that defined Kofod-Larsen’s Scandinavian modern output.
Each chair is constructed from solid rosewood, a prized tropical hardwood notable for its dense, richly grained surface and tonal warmth. The rosewood frames exhibit a reddish-brown coloration with darker streaks and visible linear grain, enhanced by a gentle polish that reveals the natural variation in the wood. The frame design is characterized by crisp lines, subtly curved backrest supports, and a sculptural sense of balance. The round tapered rear legs flow into the backrest in an integrated gesture that emphasizes fluidity and craftsmanship.
The backrest is gently curved and horizontally oriented, designed to follow the contour of the user’s back. The seat is newly reupholstered in a smooth cognac brown leather, providing a warm chromatic contrast to the darker wood and offering comfortable support. The seat shape is softly contoured with rounded edges and a generous width, reflecting ergonomic consideration. The chairs’ design is lightweight in appearance but structurally robust, with a stretchered base that adds rigidity and geometric interest.
Ib Kofod-Larsen (1921–2003) was one of the leading figures in Scandinavian design, celebrated for his mastery of wood joinery, use of luxurious materials, and his ability to produce furniture that was both sculptural and functional. His collaborations with Swedish and Danish manufacturers, including Seffle Möbelfabrik, resulted in numerous classic designs now highly sought after on the international market.
The chairs are in good vintage condition, with minor signs of use consistent with age. The wood surfaces show slight patina and subtle variations, while the leather is recently restored and presents in excellent condition.
Each chair measures 52.5 cm in width, 51 cm in depth, and 72.5 cm in height, with a seat height of 44 cm. In inches, these dimensions translate approximately to 20.7 inches wide, 20.1 inches deep, 28.5 inches high, with a seat height of 17.3 inches.
