Ib Kofod-Larsen dining chairs
This rare set of six dining chairs was designed by Ib Kofod-Larsen and produced by Seffle Möbelfabrik in Sweden during the 1960s. The design reflects the refined elegance and structural clarity that define Kofod-Larsen’s body of work, particularly his mastery of organic forms and sensitivity to materials. The chairs are constructed from solid rosewood, a prized hardwood known for its rich coloration and distinctive grain patterns. The backrests are gently curved, offering ergonomic support, and are shaped from a single horizontally arched panel that is visually balanced by the slender, rounded vertical uprights. The tone of the rosewood ranges from deep chocolate to reddish-brown hues, with linear figuring that enhances the sculptural quality of the frame.
The seats are upholstered in the original cognac brown leather, which has developed a patinated surface with visible signs of wear and natural aging. The leather displays localized marks and subtle tonality shifts consistent with decades of use. The wear adds character and authenticity without compromising the structural soundness or comfort.
Kofod-Larsen (1921–2003) was one of the leading figures in Scandinavian modernism. His works were often crafted in both Denmark and Sweden and are notable for their sculptural simplicity, material expressiveness, and fine craftsmanship. Collaborating with Seffle Möbelfabrik, Kofod-Larsen brought a distinctive Danish design sensibility into Swedish production, achieving a seamless blend of the two national traditions.
Each chair measures 52.5 cm in width, 51 cm in depth, and 72.5 cm in height, with a seat height of 44 cm. These dimensions translate to approximately 20.7 inches wide, 20.1 inches deep, 28.5 inches high, and a seat height of 17.3 inches.
