Hans Wegner dining chairs
This is a rare and complete set of 16 dining chairs, a lesser-known variant of model JH507, designed by Hans J. Wegner and produced by cabinetmaker Johannes Hansen in Denmark in 1952. Wegner, one of the leading figures of Danish modernism, is renowned for his mastery in woodworking and for designing chairs that seamlessly balance sculptural elegance with practical comfort. This set reflects his deep understanding of ergonomics, materiality, and craftsmanship.
Each chair features a finely sculpted solid teak frame with a rich reddish-brown hue and prominent linear grain. The frames display the distinct organic shaping typical of Wegner’s early 1950s designs, where joinery and form are integrated with visual lightness. The rear legs extend above the top rail to gently cradle the upholstered backrest, creating a flowing vertical contour that emphasizes the chair’s verticality while preserving softness and human proportion. The seats and backs are upholstered in black leather, which has developed a natural patina over time, ranging from semi-matte to lustrous in high-contact areas. The leather retains suppleness and structural integrity, with natural creases, slight surface cracking, and tone variation that lend authenticity and age-appropriate character. The seating is generously cushioned and offers notable comfort without compromising the sleek, architectural profile.
Condition across the set is very good, with consistent wear indicative of careful use. The teak frames are structurally sound and retain their original finish, showing minor marks and edge wear. The leather surfaces vary slightly in tone across chairs, and some seats exhibit moderate signs of age, including wrinkles and light surface impressions, while maintaining functional quality.
This set exemplifies the philosophy of functional elegance central to the Danish modern movement and highlights the exclusive collaboration between Hans Wegner and master cabinetmaker Johannes Hansen, a partnership responsible for some of the most collectible and technically advanced chairs of the 20th century.
The dimensions of each chair are 51.5 cm in width, 48 cm in depth, and 78 cm in height, with a seat height of 43 cm. These measurements convert to approximately 20.3 inches wide, 18.9 inches deep, 30.7 inches high, with a seat height of 16.9 inches.
