Information

This is a very rare set of ten dining chairs designed by Danish architect Kurt Østervig and produced by Bramin in Denmark during the 1950s. The design is a strong example of Scandinavian modernism, distinguished by its sculptural detailing, refined joinery, and dynamic visual balance. Østervig’s work is known for combining expressive silhouettes with functional construction, and these chairs reflect his commitment to craftsmanship and proportion.

The frames are constructed from solid walnut, finished in a deep, warm brown tone with a fine satin sheen that enhances the natural figuring of the wood. The grain is tight and consistent, with subtle variation visible on the crest rails and legs. The structure is defined by its sharply tapered legs and the angular rear supports, which intersect with the seat and backrest in a striking V-formation. The backrest is formed from a curved horizontal element with sculpted edges that provide ergonomic lumbar support and visual rhythm. The seat pads have been newly reupholstered in a light grey wool blend from Kvadrat™, a Danish textile manufacturer known for its durable and design-led fabrics. The upholstery is neatly tailored and padded with modern foam, offering improved comfort while respecting the original profile and proportions. The curved seat rails beneath the cushion create a floating visual effect, further emphasizing the chair’s lightness and precision.

Bramin, active throughout the mid-20th century, was among Denmark’s most respected manufacturers, known for its collaborations with leading designers including Hans J. Wegner and H.W. Klein.  The chairs are in excellent restored condition, with refreshed upholstery, solid structural integrity, and only minor signs of age on the wooden frames.

Each chair measures 47 cm in width, 52 cm in depth, and 79.5 cm in height, with a seat height of 45 cm. In imperial units, the dimensions are approximately 18.5 inches wide, 20.5 inches deep, 31.3 inches high, and a seat height of 17.7 inches.
