Otto Wretling ideal table
This rare height-adjustable table, known as the “Idealbordet” was designed by Otto Wretling and his son Bo Wretling in 1935 and produced by Otto Wretling’s workshop in Umeå, Sweden. The design exemplifies the fusion of early modernist engineering principles with high-quality Swedish craftsmanship, resulting in a multifunctional piece suitable for both domestic and professional settings.
The table features a rectangular top veneered in highly figured flamed birch with distinctive, swirling grain patterns and a warm golden tone. The tabletop edges are trimmed with rosewood, providing a subtle contrast and framing the surface. Characteristic black geometric inlays, visible at the folding joint, accentuate the functional articulation of the design. The table can be extended from a compact square to a larger rectangular format using a folding leaf mechanism secured with robust metal hinges.
The base construction is equally functional and industrial in character, comprising a black lacquered steel column with an internal height adjustment mechanism, supported by a solid birch plinth. The height is adjustable in seven discrete steps, ranging from 60 cm to 78 cm (23.6 to 30.7 inches), allowing the table to transform from a low console table to a dining or work surface. Adjustment is performed through a geared steel track and locking knobs integrated into the central column.
This example is in good vintage condition with careful restoration preserving its historical integrity. The flamed birch veneer shows only minor signs of wear, while the steel components retain their original matte finish with some small touch-ups. The brass hardware and steel fittings display light patina consistent with age and use. The maker’s label and patent inscriptions, indicating Swedish and international patent registrations, remain intact on the underside.
Otto Wretling was a cabinetmaker and furniture designer from Umeå who, alongside his son Bo Wretling, explored innovative mechanical furniture solutions in the early 20th century. The “Idealbordet” was their signature creation, representing a pioneering approach to height-adjustable design well ahead of its time, combining Art Deco influences with functionalist ideals.
The table measures 112 cm wide (44.1 inches), 68 cm deep (26.8 inches), and its height is adjustable between 60 and 78 cm (23.6 to 30.7 inches). When extended, the width reaches 224 cm (88.2 inches), providing ample surface area. This rare and technically sophisticated piece reflects the ingenuity of Scandinavian pre-war furniture design.
