Information

The ceiling lamp model T-603, designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced by Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB in Markaryd, Sweden, during the 1960s, is a distinctive example of mid-century Scandinavian lighting design. The lamp’s structure centers around a circular brass frame supporting a stepped, tiered form, which is suspended from the ceiling by a slender cord attached to a cylindrical brass ceiling mount. Its most notable feature is the use of multiple layers of silk fringes arranged concentrically, creating a soft, cascading effect. The silk is dyed in a deep green color, lending a rich tonal quality to the fixture.

Measuring 39 centimeters (15.4 inches) in diameter and 25.5 centimeters (10 inches) in height, the lamp’s suspension can be adjusted to a maximum length of 78 centimeters (30.7 inches). The silk fringes function not only as a decorative element but also serve to diffuse the light emitted, producing a warm, muted illumination that minimizes direct glare. This approach to lighting—employing fabric elements to soften and scatter light—is a hallmark of Jakobsson’s design philosophy, aimed at creating atmospheres that enhance interior spaces through indirect, gentle illumination.

Hans-Agne Jakobsson was a pioneering Swedish designer whose work combined the principles of Scandinavian functionalism with a keen interest in natural materials and innovative light diffusion. His use of wood, metal, and textiles to shape light into ambient, sculptural forms earned him international acclaim. Jakobsson’s company in Markaryd became a leading manufacturer of lighting fixtures during the mid-20th century, known for blending craftsmanship with modernist aesthetics.

The lamp is preserved in good condition, displaying a natural patina on its brass components that is typical for its age. The silk fringes exhibit minor irregularities, consistent with wear and the delicate nature of the fabric over time, but remain largely intact, maintaining the original visual and functional qualities of the design.
