Tapio Wirkkala table lamp
This exceptionally rare table lamp, model 61067, was designed by Tapio Wirkkala and produced by Idman Oy in Finland in 1955. The lamp features an elongated counterbalance structure crafted in solid brass, complemented by a conical perforated brass shade. The shade tapers upward, culminating in a pierced collar that diffuses subtle decorative light when illuminated. It is mounted on an adjustable brass arm, allowing for directional lighting while contributing to the lamp’s sculptural silhouette. A spherical brass weight balances the opposite end of the arm, enhancing both function and aesthetic harmony. The vertical brass rod is anchored by a rounded glass base finished in a matte grey-green tone, offering a visual softness that contrasts with the metal elements, while providing stability.
The design reveals a refined interplay between industrial precision and organic materiality, hallmarks of Wirkkala’s postwar design language. The adjustable mechanism bears the designer’s signature and embodies a functionalist aesthetic with elegant proportions. The use of brass and glass aligns with the mid-century Scandinavian lighting tradition, which favored quality materials and meticulous craftsmanship.
This example is preserved in good vintage condition, showing natural patina and surface wear consistent with its age. The brass has developed oxidation and wear, especially around moving parts and joints. The glass base exhibits signs of wear and damage, including surface abrasions and minor imperfections.
The lamp measures 12.5 cm in width, 70 cm in depth, and 65 cm in height, approximately 4.9 inches wide, 27.6 inches deep, and 25.6 inches high. Only two known examples of this model have been documented, marking it as an exceptionally rare and significant piece for collectors.
