Torsten Thorup & Claus Bonderup wall lamps
This rare set of wall-mounted lamps, model Quarto, was designed by Torsten Thorup and Claus Bonderup and produced by the Danish lighting manufacturer Focus during the 1960s. The lamps embody the clean lines and functional elegance characteristic of mid-century Scandinavian design. Each lamp features a polished brass half-dome, subtly convex in profile, with a refined and warm reflective surface that contributes to a soft ambient glow.
The construction centers on a minimalist half-spherical shade in solid brass, positioned slightly away from the mounting surface to conceal the light source behind it. This results in indirect illumination that casts a diffused light downward and outward from the lower rim, emphasizing both form and function in its lighting performance. The lamps can be oriented in multiple configurations depending on the desired lighting effect or spatial arrangement.
Torsten Thorup and Claus Bonderup were Danish architects and industrial designers whose collaborative work often explored the intersection of minimalism and sculptural form. Their designs from the 1960s and 1970s gained recognition for their clarity, restraint, and adaptability across various contexts, from domestic interiors to public spaces.
The Quarto model is exemplary of their approach to architectural lighting, combining formal simplicity with technical precision. Produced by Focus, a Danish company known for its quality metalwork and contemporary lighting designs of the period, the lamps reflect the high standards of Danish manufacturing during the mid-century era.
Each lamp measures 27 cm in width, 15 cm in height, and extends 15 cm from the wall. In inches, this corresponds to approximately 10.6 inches wide, 5.9 inches high, and 5.9 inches in depth.
