Information

This height-adjustable floor lamp, model 1842, was designed by Josef Frank and produced by Svenskt Tenn in Sweden during the 1950s. It exemplifies Frank’s humanistic approach to modernism, which combines functional design with elegant materials and thoughtful proportions. The lamp is constructed entirely in brass and retains its original conical textile lampshade.

The structure consists of a slender tubular stem rising from a three-legged base, with each leg gently arched and terminating in a small brass sphere. The height-adjustable feature is facilitated by a telescoping central shaft, which can be extended and locked in place to suit varying lighting needs. The shade is supported by a curved brass arm, which terminates in a jointed mount that allows the shade to be angled. This design provides both stability and adjustability, emphasizing versatility in use.

The lampshade is a flared cone made of off-white textile, held in place by a cylindrical brass collar at the top. It emits a warm, diffuse light, which softens the lamp’s presence and contributes to a relaxed, ambient atmosphere. This approach to lighting is consistent with the Scandinavian mid-century ideal of ambient, non-direct illumination, providing a gentle glow rather than harsh, direct light.

Josef Frank (1885–1967), an Austrian-born architect and designer, became a central figure in Swedish design after emigrating to Stockholm in the 1930s. His work for Svenskt Tenn defied the strict rationalism of early modernism by reintroducing warmth, organic forms, and historical references. Svenskt Tenn, founded in 1924, remains one of Sweden’s most respected interior design firms, known for producing timeless pieces with enduring quality and refined detailing.

The lamp is marked with the stamped inscription “SVENSKT TENN 1842” on the brass collar. It remains in very good vintage condition, with an even patina on the brass components and only minor wear to the shade. The mechanical components function as intended.

The dimensions of the lamp are 24 cm in width, 50 cm in depth, and adjustable in height from 96 to 150 cm (approximately 9.45 inches wide, 19.69 inches deep, and height adjustable from 37.80 to 59.06 inches).
