Information

This rare and early floor lamp was designed by Josef Frank and produced by Svenskt Tenn in Sweden during the 1930s. A distinctive example of Scandinavian modernist lighting design, the piece embodies the soft functionalism and elegant materiality characteristic of Frank’s work.

The lamp features a height-adjustable brass stem with a rich, aged patina, resting on a circular, brass-weighted base raised slightly on spherical feet. A knurled locking mechanism allows the upper stem to be adjusted vertically, contributing both functional flexibility and visual contrast. The arm of the lamp curves in a graceful, serpentine arc, culminating in a socket fitted with a white opaline glass diffuser and its original pleated textile shade.

The conical shade is finely crafted in natural woven textile with rhythmic pleating, allowing a soft and atmospheric light to pass through when illuminated. The overall composition is balanced and sculptural, with the fluidity of the arm contrasting the geometric simplicity of the base and stem.

In good vintage condition, the brass surfaces exhibit signs of natural oxidation and patina consistent with age, enhancing the lamp’s character and authenticity. The original textile shade is preserved, showing only minor wear. The switch is positioned discreetly on the base, maintaining the clean lines of the form.

An exceptional piece from the early modern Scandinavian period, this lamp highlights Josef Frank’s humanist approach to lighting design, merging utility, refinement, and a gentle sense of organic movement.
