Information

This wall-mounted mirror was produced in Sweden during the 1940s by an unknown designer. It features an organically contoured silhouette that softens the rectangular form with gently convex curves along all four edges. This biomorphic shape reflects early Scandinavian modern tendencies, favoring flowing, natural lines over rigid geometry during the transitional period between pre- and post-war design.

The mirror is mounted on a dark backing panel and secured by four small cylindrical pewter brackets at each corner. The use of pewter, a soft silver-toned metal alloy, is distinctive for the period and adds a subtle artisanal touch to the construction. The backing panel creates a slight separation between the mirror and the wall, emphasizing the irregular perimeter of the glass.

The mirror’s surface shows age-consistent wear, including a visible nick at the upper right corner and several small speckled areas where the silvering has deteriorated slightly. These signs of aging add to its vintage character.

This piece embodies early Scandinavian modern decorative sensibilities, where functional objects were endowed with refined sculptural form and meticulous craftsmanship. Although the designer remains unidentified, the mirror likely originated from a small-scale Swedish workshop or decorative arts manufacturer, as suggested by the choice of materials and the handcrafted feel of the pewter fittings.

The mirror measures 78 cm in width, 2 cm in depth, and 78 cm in height, forming a square when viewed head-on (approximately 30.7 by 0.8 by 30.7 inches).
