Johannes Aasbjerg tray
This rare and large tray was designed by Johannes Aasbjerg and produced by Aasbjerg & Ørtoft in Denmark during the 1950s. Crafted from solid teak, the tray displays a rich, warm tone complemented by a finely grained surface. Its elongated rectangular form is softened by gently rounded edges, while the recessed surface ensures practicality without compromising its refined aesthetic. A distinctive triangular cutout at one end serves as both a visual accent and a functional handle, facilitating carrying or hanging.
The design exemplifies mid-century Scandinavian modern principles, emphasizing natural materials and minimal ornamentation to highlight the inherent beauty of the wood. The craftsmanship is evident in the precise carving, smooth transitions, and meticulous finishing, all hallmarks of Danish woodworking tradition.
Johannes Aasbjerg was recognized for his finely crafted wooden objects, focusing on simplicity and high functionality. Aasbjerg & Ørtoft, the Danish manufacturer, specialized in producing quality wooden accessories and furniture that reflected the ideals of the Scandinavian modern movement.
This tray is preserved in original condition, featuring an even patina that enhances the depth and character of the teak grain. Its dimensions are 77 cm in width, 19.5 cm in depth, and 3 cm in height (30.3 by 7.7 by 1.2 inches), combining utility with timeless design.
