Aage Herløw wall lamps
This pair of wall lamps, designed by Aage Herløw and produced in Denmark during the 1950s, is a rare example of post-war Scandinavian lighting design in solid brass. The fixtures feature an architectural composition that is both sculptural and functional, with a vertical central stem supporting three tiers of light arms arranged in a triangular configuration. Each arm terminates in a bell-shaped socket cover, flaring gently outward to echo the contours of a flower bud.
The brass surface has acquired a natural patina, lending warmth and depth to the metal while preserving its original polish in select areas. The fixture’s structure includes curvilinear arms and round mounting backplates, complemented by a solid brass sphere at the base that visually anchors the design. The wiring is integrated cleanly within the central spine, and the sockets accommodate exposed round bulbs, contributing to a soft, atmospheric glow when illuminated.
Aage Herløw, an important but lesser-known Danish designer, produced a range of lighting and furniture during the mid-20th century. His work is characterized by refined detailing and an emphasis on material honesty. These wall lamps reflect his ability to combine traditional craftsmanship with modernist clarity, resulting in objects that are timeless in both function and form.
The pair remains in excellent condition, with all original components intact and no structural damage. The brass has been carefully preserved, with minor surface wear consistent with age, and all electrical elements are fully operational. The lamps display well both lit and unlit, casting sculptural shadows and creating a warm, diffused illumination.
Each lamp measures 30 cm in width, 23 cm in depth, and 42 cm in height, equivalent to approximately 11.8 x 9.1 x 16.5 inches. With their architectural elegance and finely worked brass, these wall lamps are a highly collectible example of 1950s Danish design, suited to both residential and curated interiors.
