Acton Bjørn wall lamps

These rare and substantial wall lamps were designed by Acton Bjørn and produced by the Danish lighting manufacturer Fog & Mørup during the 1940s. It is a notable example of early Danish modern lighting design, combining functional sophistication with sculptural presence. The fixture features five opaline glass shades, each supported by a gently curved brass arm radiating from a triangular brass backplate. The layout is symmetrical and architecturally inspired, with each shade evenly spaced to distribute light in a balanced manner.

The opaline glass shades are delicately shaped with a softened, organic profile that diffuses the light warmly. Their form is reminiscent of traditional oil lamp chimneys but rendered in a distinctly modern interpretation. The brass fittings, including the scalloped crown-like collars that hold the glass, display light patination and age-appropriate wear, which enhances the authenticity and historic appeal of the piece. The overall composition balances industrial materials with a decorative sensibility.

The design language aligns with Bjørn’s broader body of work, which often integrated geometric rigor with warm materials and indirect lighting effects. His designs for Fog & Mørup helped to define mid-century Danish lighting aesthetics, preceding the more minimal styles of the postwar years. This particular model reflects a transitional period, where classical inspiration merged with the clean lines of functionalism.

The dimensions of the lamp are 55 cm (21.65 inches) in width, 25 cm (9.84 inches) in depth, and 40 cm (15.75 inches) in height. Its size and luminous output make it suitable as a feature piece in a hallway, stairwell, or large interior wall, where it functions as both light source and decorative object.
