Information

Ceramic bowl designed by Agne Aronsson and produced in Sweden during the 1950s. The piece reflects the restrained character of Swedish studio ceramics of the period, where simple forms and subtly varied glazes were used to emphasize material, proportion and craftsmanship.

The bowl has a balanced, rounded form with softly curved walls rising from a small circular foot. The body is generous in relation to the narrow base, creating a compact yet elegant silhouette. A fine, slightly defined rim completes the otherwise continuous curvature of the vessel.

The surface is covered in a muted grey-green glaze with a finely speckled appearance. Numerous small brown and darker mineral-like flecks are distributed throughout the glaze, giving the otherwise quiet surface considerable depth when viewed closely. Subtle variations from pale grey and beige to soft green-blue tones become visible across the curved body. Around the rim and foot, the glaze develops into a slightly deeper blue-grey, gently articulating the outline of the bowl.

The same glaze continues across the interior, where the broad uninterrupted surface makes its fine speckling and tonal variation particularly apparent. Rather than relying on decoration, the bowl derives its character from the interaction between its simple geometry, tactile ceramic body and understated glaze.

Agne Aronsson belonged to the generation of Swedish ceramicists working within the strong post-war tradition of Scandinavian studio pottery. During the 1950s, Swedish ceramics increasingly explored the expressive qualities of stoneware and high-fired glazes while retaining the functional clarity associated with Scandinavian modernism. Individual workshop production allowed subtle irregularities in throwing and firing to remain visible, distinguishing such pieces from more standardized industrial ceramics.

This bowl is characteristic of that approach. Its restrained form is almost archetypal, while the softly mottled glaze prevents the surface from appearing uniform. The combination of a rounded body, narrow foot and subdued natural coloration gives the piece a distinctly organic quality, closely connected to the broader Scandinavian interest in earthy materials and uncomplicated functional forms during the mid-twentieth century.

The underside carries an impressed artist’s monogram, identifying the piece as the work of Agne Aronsson. The unglazed central area of the base also reveals the pale ceramic body beneath the surrounding grey-green glaze.

The bowl is in good vintage condition, with minor signs of age and use consistent with a ceramic object from the period.

Measuring approximately 13 cm (5.1 in) in diameter and 9.5 cm (3.7 in) in height.
