Aino Aalto chairs
Rare pair of dining chairs model 615 designed by Aino Aalto. Produced by Artek in Finland.
This is a rare pair of model 615 dining chairs designed by Aino Aalto and produced by Artek in Finland during the 1950s. The chairs are constructed from solid birch, finished in a natural tone, with seats and backrests composed of woven cane in a geometric over-under pattern. The combination of warm wood and tactile cane exemplifies the humanistic and material-conscious ethos central to Scandinavian modernism.
The form of the chairs is straightforward and rectilinear, with squared front legs and slightly splayed rear legs that follow the angle of the backrest. The woven cane elements are tightly executed, providing both visual transparency and structural support. The backrest is positioned at a comfortable recline, and the seat is slightly inset within the birch frame. The design emphasizes clarity, craftsmanship, and an honest expression of materials.
Aino Aalto (1894–1949), Finnish architect and designer, was a key figure in shaping modern Finnish design and a co-founder of Artek alongside her husband Alvar Aalto. While often working collaboratively, Aino’s independent contributions, particularly in interiors and furniture, are increasingly recognized for their sensitivity, practicality, and quiet innovation. Model 615 reflects her approach to democratic design, where simple construction, natural materials, and refined proportions were prioritized.
The chairs were produced by Artek, the Finnish furniture company established in 1935 by the Aaltos with Nils-Gustav Hahl and Maire Gullichsen. Artek became a central platform for modernist ideals in Finland, supporting high-quality, functional furniture with an architectural sensibility. Pieces such as the 615 were designed for both private homes and public interiors, embodying the dual purpose of beauty and everyday utility.
The condition of the pair is good, with the birch frames showing minor wear and age-related patina. The woven cane remains taut and intact, with light variations in tone consistent with use and natural aging.
Each chair measures 44 cm in width, 49 cm in depth, and 80 cm in height, with a seat height of 42.5 cm. In imperial units, this corresponds to approximately 17.3 inches wide, 19.3 inches deep, 31.5 inches high, and a seat height of 16.7 inches.
