Information

This rare matched pair of armchairs was designed by Aksel Bender Madsen and Ejner Larsen and produced by Fritz Hansen in Denmark during the 1960s. Crafted from solid teak and upholstered in original black leather, the chairs embody the principles of Danish modernism, combining craftsmanship, restraint, and ergonomic design.

The frames are constructed from teak with a medium golden-brown tone and a fine, straight grain. The wood surfaces are smoothly finished, exhibiting minimal signs of age while maintaining a rich color and clarity. The legs are gently tapered and round in profile, balancing structural stability with visual lightness. The flat armrests have a slight elevation and subtle curvature that harmonizes with the backrest’s form.

The seats and backrests consist of molded shells fully upholstered in black leather, which shows a slight sheen and minor creasing consistent with age. The leather remains intact and in excellent condition, free from tears or structural damage. The upholstery fits tightly over the shells, emphasizing the clean curves and soft contours of the design.

The overall form balances solid geometric structure with gentle organic shaping. The backrest is ergonomically reclined with lumbar support, while the angular armrests provide a precise counterpoint to the rounded seat. This interaction of straight and curved lines reflects the designers’ background in fine cabinetmaking and their interest in anatomical comfort.

Aksel Bender Madsen and Ejner Larsen were a notable Danish design partnership known for their utilitarian and aesthetically refined furniture. Their work is marked by clear construction and minimal ornamentation, often produced by Denmark’s high-quality manufacturers. Fritz Hansen, founded in 1872, has been central to Scandinavian design history and is recognized for its collaborations with internationally acclaimed architects and designers.

These chairs bear Fritz Hansen’s original Danish control label and model number 6302. Each measures 63.5 cm in width, 59 cm in depth, and 87.5 cm in height, with a seat height of 44 cm. In imperial measurements, this corresponds to approximately 25 inches wide, 23.2 inches deep, 34.4 inches high, and a seat height of 17.3 inches. Their dimensions and design make them suitable for both formal and casual interiors, combining sculptural presence with understated elegance.
