Alf Svensson floor lamp
This rare floor lamp, model G-36, was designed by the Swedish designer Alf Svensson and produced by Bergbom in Sweden during the 1950s. It exemplifies Svensson’s refined approach to Scandinavian modern lighting, where strict geometric forms were balanced with functional adaptability. The lamp is constructed from brass and black lacquered metal, with a sharply conical shade that emphasizes both directionality of light and sculptural presence. The tripod base in black lacquered metal provides structural stability while maintaining a light and minimal aesthetic.
The shade is adjustable, attached to the brass stem with a pivot joint that allows angling of the light. A perforated detail near the top of the shade adds a subtle decorative touch, while also helping to ventilate heat from the bulb. The combination of black lacquer and brass reflects the material palette of postwar Scandinavian design, where warm metallic tones were often paired with painted surfaces to achieve both elegance and modernity. The lamp bears the Bergbom production mark inside the shade, underscoring its authenticity as a mid-century piece.
The condition is good vintage, with small signs of usage and a consistent patina on the brass, both of which contribute to its character and historical presence. This lamp is a representative example of Scandinavian mid-century lighting design, where form, function, and atmosphere were carefully integrated.
