Alf Svensson wall lamps

Rare wall lamps was designed by Alf Svensson and produced by Bergboms in Sweden, reflecting the refined material palette and sculptural sensibility typical of Scandinavian lighting from the mid-20th century. Their design exemplifies Svensson’s attention to proportion, detail, and the interplay of materials, resulting in a piece that is both utilitarian and formally elegant.

The lamps are composed of brass and opaline glass. The brass elements include a circular wall plate and a straight horizontal arm, both finished in a warm golden tone that has developed a natural patina over time. This surface oxidation is consistent with the age of the lamps and adds to their historical authenticity. At the end of each arm, a subtle flower-like brass detail forms the transitional base for the glass shade, offering a decorative counterpoint to the otherwise minimal geometry.

The opaline glass shades are shaped into smooth, rounded, bulb-like forms. This diffused glass material produces a soft, ambient white light when in use, balancing the warmth of the brass with a cool, luminous quality. The shades are intact, with no cracks or chips, and preserve their original visual and functional integrity.

Each lamp measures 16 cm in width, 19.5 cm in depth, and 37.5 cm in height (6.3 x 7.7 x 14.8 inches). These proportions allow them to serve as both decorative and practical wall-mounted lighting, suitable for use in living areas, hallways, or bedside arrangements.

Alf Svensson, an influential Swedish designer active during the 1950s and 1960s, was known for his work across seating, case goods, and lighting. His collaboration with Bergboms, a notable Swedish lighting manufacturer, resulted in several distinctive designs characterized by subtle ornamentation and a strong sense of material balance. These wall lamps are a representative example of that collaboration, combining functional efficiency with timeless design sensibilities rooted in mid-century Scandinavian modernism.
