Information

Rare set of 10 armchairs model 45 designed by Alvar Aalto and produced by Artek in Finland during the 1960s. Originally designed in 1947, the model represents Aalto’s characteristic synthesis of architectural clarity, organic materials, and human-centered modernism. The chairs display a refined balance between strict geometric structure and the warmth of natural woven cane, resulting in a timeless and highly functional design that has become one of the most recognizable seating models produced by Artek.

The construction is executed in black painted birch with elegantly bent arm supports and legs, showcasing Aalto’s pioneering approach to laminated and curved wood technology developed in collaboration with Artek. The continuous flowing armrests create a sculptural silhouette while simultaneously providing structural stability and comfort. The contrast between the deep black lacquered frame and the warm honey-toned woven cane gives the chairs a striking graphic appearance while preserving a natural tactile quality.

The seats, backs, and armrests are woven in cane with a beautifully executed open lattice pattern. The woven surfaces introduce transparency and lightness to the otherwise architectural form, while also emphasizing the craftsmanship associated with Finnish modernist furniture production of the period. The proportions are generous and comfortable, making the chairs suitable both as dining armchairs and as occasional seating in private or public interiors.

Model 45 is considered one of Alvar Aalto’s most sophisticated seating designs from the post-war era and remains highly sought after by collectors, architects, and institutions. Sets of this size are particularly rare to encounter on the market, especially with consistent age, finish, and preserved woven details throughout.

The chairs are in good vintage condition with minor signs of age and use consistent with time. The black painted birch frames retain a rich surface with light wear and patina, while the woven cane remains in overall very good condition with only minor variations and small traces of use visible upon close inspection.
