Alvar Aalto armchairs
This rare pair of armchairs, model 51, was designed by Alvar Aalto in 1932 and produced by Artek in Finland. The design embodies the core tenets of early Scandinavian functionalism, where clarity of form, material honesty, and comfort converge in a coherent architectural expression. The armchairs are constructed from solid birch and laminated bentwood, combining structural integrity with a visually restrained profile. The use of exposed finger joints on the arms enhances the tactile craftsmanship while asserting the modernist focus on joinery as a visible design element.
The seat and backrest are formed from a single bent plywood sheet, painted in original black and gently contoured for ergonomic support. The seat flows continuously into the backrest with a subtle flare at the top, introducing a dynamic curvature that contrasts with the rectilinear frame. The matte black surface shows light age-related wear, preserving its historical authenticity while maintaining structural integrity. This interplay of black-painted plywood and the natural blond birch frame gives the chairs a graphic and architectural presence.
Alvar Aalto was a pivotal figure in 20th-century modern architecture and design, recognized for his pioneering use of bentwood and his deep understanding of human-centered design. His collaboration with the Finnish company Artek, founded in 1935, enabled the production of designs that bridged industrial production with organic form. Model 51 is one of the earlier examples that exemplifies Aalto’s signature approach—visually light yet technically innovative, with an emphasis on natural materials, functional simplicity, and democratic design ideals.
These armchairs are firmly rooted in the functionalist tradition of early Scandinavian modernism. They reflect a period when Nordic design began to shift away from heavy, ornamental furniture toward lighter, more efficient forms that could serve both public and private interiors. The restrained palette, structural logic, and subtle sculptural character make these chairs exemplary of that movement.
Dimensions for each chair are 53 cm wide, 65 cm deep, and 77 cm high (20.9 x 25.6 x 30.3 inches), with a seat height of 40 cm (15.7 inches). Their proportions make them suitable for lounge or side seating, offering a balance between upright support and relaxed posture.
