Alvar Aalto floor lamp
This rare and early production A805 floor lamp, often referred to as the “Angel Wing” lamp, was designed by Alvar Aalto and produced by Valaistustyö in Finland in the 1950s. The lamp is characterized by its distinctive layered white-painted metal shade, which creates a sculptural, wing-like silhouette and softly diffuses the light. The shade is constructed from a series of overlapping metal strips, arranged to direct light upwards and outwards, resulting in a warm, atmospheric illumination.
The shaft combines a polished brass section with a black leather-wrapped lower column, offering both tactile richness and visual contrast. The circular base is also leather-wrapped, providing a cohesive and elegant look while giving stability to the tall form. The pull switch with its original bakelite knob remains intact. The lamp exhibits a well-preserved patina with minor wear on the painted metal and light scuffs on the leather, consistent with age and careful use.
Alvar Aalto (1898–1976) was a pioneering Finnish architect and designer whose work profoundly shaped modern architecture and design. He was known for his humanistic approach to modernism, often combining natural materials with functional innovation. The A805 floor lamp was part of Aalto’s extensive work in lighting design, developed for the National Pensions Institute in Helsinki, and has since become one of his most celebrated lighting models.
This piece exemplifies the mid-century Scandinavian design ethos, combining functionality, sculptural form, and exceptional craftsmanship. Its iconic silhouette makes it one of the most recognizable floor lamps of the period.
