Anna-Greta Sjöqvist carpet
This mid-century flat-weave carpet was designed by Anna-Greta Sjöqvist in the 1950s and produced in Sweden. Sjöqvist was active in the Swedish textile tradition, which during the mid-20th century combined centuries-old weaving techniques with modernist design sensibilities. Her work often incorporated strong geometric borders and a balanced use of color, drawing on both folk motifs and the clean-lined aesthetic of Scandinavian modernism.
The rug is woven in wool with a dominant green central field, framed by a broad border of geometric patterns in black, mustard yellow, pink, and red against a natural beige ground. The repeating motif alternates stylized figures and floral forms, creating a rhythmic structure around the central panel. The edges are finished with a narrow green stripe and natural fringes, which soften the otherwise rectilinear layout.
The craftsmanship is characteristic of Swedish rölakan technique, a flat-weave method that produces a durable, reversible textile. The piece is in good vintage condition with light signs of wear and a patina that reflects its age and use. It represents a period when Swedish weaving gained international recognition for its quality, modernity, and strong connection to national tradition.
