Anna-Johanna Ångström carpet

This rare flat-weave wool carpet was designed by Anna-Johanna Ångström and produced in Sweden during the mid-20th century. The carpet displays a geometric composition centered on repeating stylized floral and cross motifs arranged in a symmetrical grid. Its color palette includes ochre, mustard yellow, warm browns, soft beige, cream, and pale grey, reflecting the balanced and harmonious tones characteristic of Swedish mid-century textile design.

The weaving is tightly executed, likely employing the traditional rölakan technique, known for its durability and sharp, graphic pattern definition. The surface is even and flat, with a firm hand feel. The edges are finished with a solid border featuring a subtle stepped motif, while the shorter ends are completed with hand-braided and knotted fringes in undyed natural wool.

Anna-Johanna Ångström was active in Sweden’s mid-20th-century textile scene and contributed to its rich heritage by blending folk-art geometry with modernist design principles. Her works are relatively scarce and appreciated for their craftsmanship and visual clarity.
