Arne Jacobsen dining chairs
This is a set of six iconic “3107” dining chairs, designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1955 and produced by Fritz Hansen in Denmark. Manufactured in 1969, these chairs are exemplary representations of mid-century Scandinavian design, combining industrial production with organic form and timeless materiality.
Each chair consists of a single, continuous shell of molded plywood veneered in teak, displaying a rich golden-brown coloration and an expressive linear grain pattern. The shell is sculpted with a narrow waist, flaring into a wide, wing-like backrest and gently scooped seat—an ergonomic shape that was radical at the time of its introduction and remains widely celebrated for its comfort and visual balance.
The base is composed of chromed tubular steel, designed to be both lightweight and structurally resilient. The four slender legs are slightly splayed and terminate with original glides. The design allows the chairs to be easily stackable, a functional attribute that contributed to their popularity in institutional, domestic, and commercial settings.
Arne Jacobsen (1902–1971) was one of Denmark’s most influential architects and designers. Known for his synthesis of modernist rigor and naturalistic form, Jacobsen’s work ranges from architecture to lighting and furniture. The Series 7 or “3107” chair was his most commercially successful furniture design and an evolution of his earlier Ant Chair, reflecting advancements in plywood molding techniques. The chair was an immediate success upon release and has remained in continuous production since.
Fritz Hansen, the original producer and long-time collaborator of Jacobsen, was instrumental in developing the technical solutions that made the curved, laminated plywood shell feasible at scale. Founded in 1872, Fritz Hansen remains one of the foremost names in Danish furniture production, particularly known for its high-profile 20th-century collaborations with Jacobsen and other modernist figures.
These chairs are in good vintage condition, retaining their original teak veneer and chrome-plated bases. The wood surfaces exhibit minor signs of use and age-related patina, particularly on the seat areas, but the veneer remains intact and the chairs are structurally sound. The steel bases show expected signs of oxidation consistent with their age, without compromising stability or stackability.
