Information

This very rare early floor lamp was designed by Arne Jacobsen and produced by Louis Poulsen in Denmark during the 1950s. The lamp is constructed from a combination of brass and lacquered metal, showcasing the minimalist yet refined material palette that characterizes Scandinavian modernist lighting design. The vertical brass stem rises from a circular base, which is made from cream-colored lacquered metal with a low profile. The base is supported by small spherical brass feet, and it exhibits visible wear to the lacquer, including edge chipping and a natural patina, consistent with its vintage origin.

The lamp features an arched, flexible brass gooseneck, allowing for directional adjustment of the conical shade. The shade is finished in a warm off-white or light cream tone and constructed from spun metal, with a smooth tapering profile that focuses the light downward. The socket holder and pivot are integrated into the top of the shade, accompanied by a small adjustment knob that enables orientation of the light. The lamp emits a soft, focused beam, making it ideal for reading or task lighting.

Arne Jacobsen (1902–1971) was one of Denmark’s most internationally renowned architects and designers, famous for blending architecture, furniture, and applied design. While his furniture designs like the Egg and Swan chairs are iconic, his lighting designs are comparatively rare and highly regarded for their precision and purity of form. Jacobsen worked extensively with Louis Poulsen, Denmark’s most influential lighting manufacturer, which was responsible for producing his lighting concepts to the highest quality standards.

The dimensions of the lamp are 60 cm in width, 27 cm in depth, and 132 cm in height (approximately 23.6 x 10.6 x 52 inches). The lamp remains in good vintage condition, showing clear signs of age and use. These include a patinated brass finish, some oxidation, surface irregularities, and flaking and wear to the painted base, all contributing to the authenticity and historical character of this remarkable piece.
