Arne Tidemand-Ruud lounge chairs
This rare pair of lounge chairs, model Holmenkollen, was designed by Arne Tidemand Ruud in 1959 and produced by Norcraft in Norway. The chairs are distinguished by their sculptural solid teak frames, which exhibit a dynamic and angular profile. The design is low-slung and relaxed, characterized by a wide stance and integrated armrests formed through the continuous curvature of the wooden structure. The seat and backrest are created from a single suspended panel of black saddle leather, secured with visible leather straps and supported by an adjustable mechanism that allows the user to select from multiple reclining positions.
Accompanying the leather structure are two separate cushions for each chair: one headrest and one seat cushion. These cushions are upholstered in a textured grey wool-blend fabric, adding both comfort and subtle contrast to the leather and teak materials.
Arne Tidemand Ruud was a notable Norwegian designer and architect active during the mid-20th century, known for his furniture designs that combine athletic, architectural lines with mechanical innovation aimed at enhancing seating comfort. The Holmenkollen model exemplifies these principles, emphasizing structural clarity alongside functional adjustability. Norcraft was a respected Norwegian manufacturer specializing in high-quality designer furniture during the 1950s and 1960s, contributing to the production of pieces that blend craftsmanship with contemporary design.
The chairs are in good vintage condition, showing a well-developed patina on the leather surfaces and minor wear consistent with age on the teak frames. The reclining mechanism operates smoothly and as intended. Each chair measures 70 centimeters in width, 100 centimeters in depth, and 72 centimeters in height, with a seat height of 30 centimeters (27.6 inches W x 39.4 inches D x 28.3 inches H, seat height 11.8 inches).
