Arne Vodder lounge chair
This very rare lounge chair with integrated side table was designed by Arne Vodder and produced by the Danish firm Bovirke, a key manufacturer during the mid-century modern period known for its collaborations with leading Scandinavian designers. The piece reflects Vodder’s emphasis on functional elegance, high-quality materials, and refined joinery—hallmarks of Danish design in the 1950s and 1960s.
The chair features a solid beech-wood frame characterized by gently curved lines and precise, rounded transitions at joints and edges. The wood has a light, warm tone with visible grain and a finely sanded finish that highlights the craftsmanship involved. The beech construction ensures both visual lightness and structural integrity, allowing the form to remain open while supporting weight and movement.
The seat and backrest are composed of wide, interwoven natural leather straps. These straps are tightly secured in a grid pattern, providing resilient support and a high degree of comfort. The leather, untreated and natural in tone, shows signs of aging and will continue to develop a deep, rich patina with time, enhancing its visual and tactile character. The tactile quality of the interlaced leather contrasts beautifully with the smooth wooden frame.
Integrated into the right armrest is a circular teak tray, subtly inset and supported on a slim horizontal arm. This built-in surface demonstrates Vodder’s talent for merging form and function, offering practical utility without disturbing the visual harmony of the chair. The teak, darker than the beech frame, introduces a contrasting material with a fine grain and rich tone.
This piece embodies the Danish modern approach of incorporating utility into elegant, restrained designs. Arne Vodder, a student of Finn Juhl, was known for creating furniture that emphasized organic forms, natural materials, and usability without ostentation.
The dimensions of the lounge chair are 59 cm in height, 159 cm in length, and 90.5 cm in depth, with a seat height of 30 cm. In imperial units, this equates to approximately 23.2 inches high, 62.6 inches long, 35.6 inches deep, and 11.8 inches in seat height.
