Arne Vodder sofa
This rare two-seat sofa was designed by Arne Vodder and produced by France & Daverkosen in Denmark during the 1950s. The piece is a refined example of Danish modern furniture, showcasing Vodder’s characteristic sense of proportion, craftsmanship, and understated elegance. The frame is constructed in solid beech with sculpted teak armrests, and the seat and back cushions have been newly reupholstered in a fine grey wool fabric that complements the warm tone of the wood.
The sofa is designed with two adjustable backrest positions, a feature that combines comfort with functional sophistication. The structure is defined by softly tapered legs and angled supports, resulting in a light and dynamic silhouette. The teak armrests are smoothly curved and finely shaped, demonstrating precise joinery and tactile craftsmanship. The grey upholstery introduces a subtle contrast to the natural hues of the wood, emphasizing the sculptural quality of the frame while maintaining an overall harmonious appearance.
Arne Vodder (1926–2009) was one of the most important Danish designers of the mid-20th century and a close collaborator of Finn Juhl. Educated as an architect, Vodder applied architectural principles to furniture design, focusing on form, material honesty, and ergonomic comfort. His designs for France & Daverkosen are among his most recognized works and remain icons of the Danish modern movement.
This example is in excellent vintage condition with minor signs of wear consistent with age. The frame has developed a rich patina, and the newly upholstered cushions ensure both visual freshness and comfortable usability. The piece represents the timeless balance of function and form that defines Scandinavian mid-century design.
