Astor Glibstrup stools
This pair of stools was designed by Astor Glibstrup and produced by Frederikssund Møbelfabrik in Denmark during the 1950s. Constructed from brass-plated steel and sculpted teak, these stools embody the mid-century Scandinavian design ethos of combining organic materials with industrial simplicity.
The seats are crafted from richly grained teak veneer, featuring a pronounced saddle-shaped contour ergonomically carved for comfort while maintaining a minimalist, sculptural profile. Each seat has a softly rounded triangular shape with gently curved edges and a central dip that enhances usability. The teak displays warm reddish-brown tones with vibrant figuring and is affixed with exposed brass fasteners, adding a utilitarian detail typical of the period’s honest construction.
The seats rest on three slender brass-plated steel legs arranged in a stable tripod formation. The legs are slightly splayed for balance and end with black plastic caps that protect flooring and provide visual contrast to the brass finish. The plating exhibits a soft, aged patina with wear consistent with vintage condition.
Although Astor Glibstrup is less widely documented than some of his contemporaries, these stools showcase his refined sense of proportion and materiality, reflecting the Danish modern focus on craftsmanship, usability, and visual lightness. Frederikssund Møbelfabrik was known for collaborating with designers on small-scale, high-quality furniture production during the mid-century era.
The stools remain in very good original condition, with light wear on the brass surfaces and minimal use marks on the teak seats. The wood retains its original finish, highlighting its natural texture and warm coloration.
Each stool measures 39.5 cm in width, 25.5 cm in depth, and 48.5 cm in height, with a seat height of 45 cm. In imperial measurements, this equates to approximately 15.6 inches wide, 10 inches deep, 19.1 inches high, and a seat height of 17.7 inches. These compact yet visually striking stools function well as both practical seating and refined decorative pieces in modernist or eclectic interiors.
