Information

This rare sofa, model Utö, was designed by Axel Einar Hjorth and produced by Nordiska Kompaniet in Sweden during the 1930s. It represents Hjorth’s characteristic approach to rustic modernism, where traditional Swedish forms were distilled into a minimal, sculptural language suitable for the interiors of NK’s Sportstugemöbler series. The model combines the simplicity of vernacular carpentry with the refined detailing of high-quality Swedish craftsmanship, resulting in a piece that feels both primitive and elegantly proportioned.

The bench is constructed in acid-stained pine, giving the wood a deep, warm brown tone with visible grain patterns throughout. The design is defined by its balanced geometry, with rounded corners and slightly splayed legs providing structural stability and visual harmony. The slatted backrests at each end create a symmetrical composition and introduce a rhythm of vertical lines against the curved top rail. The original seat cushion remains, covered in a coarse textile with woven tones of rust, ochre, and brown, now heavily worn and frayed, revealing the passage of time and use.

This piece is in excellent vintage condition with a rich and even patina. The wood shows small marks and wear consistent with age, contributing to its authenticity and character. The cushion, though deteriorated, retains its original textile, offering a rare insight into the material choices of the period.

Axel Einar Hjorth (1888–1959) was one of Sweden’s most influential furniture designers, known for his work as chief designer at Nordiska Kompaniet from 1927 to 1938. His Sportstugemöbler series, produced for mountain and coastal cabins, is among his most celebrated work, merging functional design with rustic expression. These pieces have become highly sought after for their timeless form, quality materials, and historical significance within Scandinavian modernism.
