Axel Einar Hjorth stools
This very rare set of four “Skoga” stools was designed by Axel Einar Hjorth in 1932 and produced by Nordiska Kompaniet in Sweden. The model belongs to Hjorth’s celebrated Sportstugemöbler series, created during the early 1930s as a response to the growing interest in leisure living and rustic summer houses. These designs marked a departure from the refined urban elegance of earlier Swedish modernism, instead embracing a more primitive, robust aesthetic inspired by vernacular craftsmanship and the Swedish countryside.
The stools are crafted from solid pine, treated with an acid staining technique that enhances the natural grain while deepening the surface into rich, earthy brown tones. The finish reveals a varied surface with visible knots, grain lines, and tonal shifts, contributing to a distinctly organic and tactile character. Over time, the material has developed a pronounced patina, with areas of wear, surface marks, and natural aging that further emphasize the authenticity and historical presence of the pieces.
Each stool is constructed with a circular seat composed of thick, joined planks, slightly rounded at the edges and subtly softened through use. The seats are supported by three sturdy, splayed legs, each hand-shaped and tapering gently toward the base. The legs are set at an outward angle, creating a stable tripod construction while reinforcing the primitive and functional design language typical of Hjorth’s Sportstugemöbler. The joinery is intentionally visible and straightforward, underscoring the emphasis on honest construction and material integrity.
Axel Einar Hjorth, who served as chief designer for Nordiska Kompaniet during this period, is regarded as one of the key figures in Swedish design history. His Sportstugemöbler series, including models such as Utö, Sandhamn, and Skoga, has become highly sought after for its unique blend of rustic expression and early modernist sensibility. These works anticipated later trends in both Scandinavian and international design, where simplicity, material honesty, and artisanal qualities became central themes.
Each stool measures 40 cm in diameter and 45 cm in height, corresponding to approximately 15.7 inches in diameter and 17.7 inches in height. The set remains in good vintage condition with significant, even patina across all pieces, including visible wear, surface marks, and aging consistent with their age and use.
