Bengt-Johan Gullberg table
This rare adjustable table, model A2, was designed by Bengt-Johan Gullberg and produced by Gullberg Trading Company in Sweden during the 1950s. The design combines a rectangular teak tabletop with a geometrically structured black lacquered metal base composed of slender intersecting rods. The support frame forms a symmetrical X-shaped configuration when viewed from multiple angles, lending the piece a lightweight yet architectural presence while ensuring structural stability.
The tabletop is made from solid teak with a beveled edge and a warm mid-brown finish that contrasts strikingly with the black metal base. The defining characteristic of the A2 model is its three-step adjustable height mechanism, which allows the table to transform between three functional heights: coffee table at 51.5 centimeters, dining table at 71.5 centimeters, and bar table at 97 centimeters. This transition is facilitated by a mechanical system integrated within the base, designed to operate smoothly and securely.
Bengt-Johan Gullberg, a Swedish designer and entrepreneur active in the postwar period, emphasized functional modernism with a focus on modularity and user adaptability. The A2 table exemplifies this philosophy by offering versatile functionality without compromising on aesthetics. Gullberg Trading Company, his production firm, was known for producing small runs of high-quality pieces, often intended for export and contract use.
The table is in very good vintage condition, showing minor surface wear on the teak top and a light patina on the metal frame consistent with age.
Its dimensions are 120 centimeters in width, 75 centimeters in depth, with an adjustable height ranging from 51.5 to 71.5 and up to 97 centimeters (approximately 47.2 inches W x 29.5 inches D x 20.3 / 28.1 / 38.2 inches H).
