Birger Ekman ceiling lamp
This is a rare ceiling lamp / flush mount designed by Swedish designer Birger Ekman and produced by Mjölby Intarsia in Sweden during the 1930s. The lamp is a prime example of Scandinavian Art Deco, merging refined craftsmanship with stylized narrative ornamentation.
The structure is defined by a broad, circular birch veneer surround, into which a series of intricate inlays are set. These inlays are executed in brass and depict allegorical scenes featuring stylized figures, mythological horses, and clouds, all rendered in a dramatic, flowing composition typical of the Art Deco era. The warm, reddish tone of the birch wood complements the brass detailing, which has aged to a subtle patina, enhancing the visual richness of the scenes.
At the center of the lamp sits a deep, inverted dome-shaped glass diffuser in a warm amber or peach tone. The glass features etched floral or cloud-like motifs that echo the surrounding inlay patterns, reinforcing the overall theme and providing visual cohesion between the materials. The diffuser is fastened by a dark, centrally placed metal finial. The lamp is fitted with multiple interior bulbs and offers an even, warm ambient light when illuminated.
The lamp remains in very good original condition with minor surface wear consistent with age. The glass is intact and free of chips or cracks, and the wooden panel shows only subtle signs of use. The craftsmanship of Mjölby Intarsia is evident in the high-quality veneer work and precision of the brass inlays. Mjölby Intarsia was a distinguished Swedish workshop known during the early to mid-20th century for its advanced marquetry and decorative furniture and interior elements.
Birger Ekman was active in the early 20th century and is known for his contributions to Swedish design, particularly in the decorative arts. His work often combined functional design with detailed narrative elements, and he had an affinity for integrating mythology and allegorical subjects in a modern stylistic language. This lamp exemplifies Ekman’s rare approach to lighting design, merging storytelling with material precision.
The dimensions of the lamp are 83 cm in diameter and 20 cm in height, which converts to approximately 32.7 inches in diameter and 7.9 inches in height.
