Bjørn Wiinblad candlesticks
This pair of Hurricane candlesticks was designed by Bjørn Wiinblad and produced in Denmark during the 1970s. Each candlestick features a tall, slender stem in cast brass, rising from a flared circular base that provides stability. The upper section supports a brass crown-like holder with circular perforations. A clear glass chimney sits neatly into the holder, protecting the flame while emphasizing the tall and elegant silhouette of the piece. The brass surface shows a warm golden tone with a soft, even patina that enhances its vintage character.
The condition is excellent with minimal signs of wear, consistent with careful use and preservation. The glass chimneys are clear and well-proportioned, complementing the sculptural brass form. The overall impression is one of lightness and refinement, with the tall proportions making these pieces well-suited as a pair for a dining table, mantel, or sideboard.
Bjørn Wiinblad was a Danish artist and designer known for his distinctive style that often blended playful, decorative motifs with functional objects. While he is perhaps most famous for his ceramic works, Wiinblad also created a variety of metal and glass objects that display his strong sense of form and ornament. These candlesticks reflect a more restrained and architectural side of his work, focusing on proportion, rhythm, and the interaction between brass and glass.
The design is characteristic of 1970s Scandinavian decorative arts, where a combination of craftsmanship and modern sensibility created timeless objects for interior use. The use of brass and glass gives these candlesticks a formal yet warm appearance, allowing them to complement both traditional and contemporary interiors.
