Bo Wretling mirror
This rare mirror was designed by Bo Wretling and produced by Otto Wretling in Umeå, Sweden, during the 1930s. The mirror is an early example of Swedish functionalist design with influences from the emerging Scandinavian modern movement. Its organic form and refined craftsmanship demonstrate the sensitivity to material and proportion typical of the Wretling family’s workshop tradition.
The frame is made of bent mahogany wood, following a soft, double-curved contour reminiscent of the outline of a string instrument. The upper and lower fixing brackets are carved from solid dark stained beech, offering a contrasting tone and a sculptural detail that securely holds the mirror plate. The mirrored glass has aged beautifully, with areas of oxidation and characteristic spotting that add to its authenticity and historical presence.
Bo Wretling (1908–1968) was an accomplished Swedish designer and sculptor known for his work in furniture and interiors, often produced in collaboration with his father, Otto Wretling. Their workshop in Umeå was a center for artistic craftsmanship in northern Sweden, contributing to the country’s prewar design heritage. Wretling’s work is marked by its handcrafted precision and a sculptural understanding of form, balancing functionality with visual rhythm.
This mirror reflects the craftsmanship ideals of early Swedish modernism, where wood was treated as both a structural and aesthetic material. The gentle curvature and contrasting woods exemplify the restrained decorative language of the 1930s, emphasizing natural finishes and organic geometry.
The piece remains in good condition with visible signs of age and wear on the mirrored surface, consistent with its period. The wooden frame retains its warm patina and original finish.
