Bruno Karlsson vase
This is a small stoneware vase designed by Bruno Karlsson and produced in Sweden during the 1950s by Ego Stengods, a ceramic studio known for its artisanal craftsmanship and experimental surface treatments. The piece demonstrates a sculptural approach to form, comprised of three evenly spaced horizontal ridges that divide the vase vertically and emphasize its tactile presence. The body is cylindrical, with a slightly flared mouth and rounded base, resulting in a balanced yet dynamic profile.
The glaze is a mottled ochre-brown with rich tonal variation, ranging from burnt umber and rust to lighter amber shades. There are darker streaks and subtle transitions around the contours that emphasize the ridged structure. The interior exhibits a deeper glaze concentration, contributing to a slightly glossy finish within the mouth, in contrast to the more matte external surface. These characteristics are indicative of high-temperature reduction firing, which contributes to the vase’s depth of color and variation.
The base is inscribed with “EGO Stengods Ateljé” and a signature mark attributed to Bruno Karlsson, confirming authorship and studio production. Ego Stengods operated during a period of heightened interest in individual ceramic expression within Sweden, reflecting a broader mid-century Scandinavian movement toward studio-based, small-scale ceramic art. Bruno Karlsson’s work is associated with strong silhouettes, restrained detailing, and a commitment to the material’s natural properties.
The vase is in good vintage condition with minor signs of wear, including slight surface irregularities and natural patination, consistent with age and handling. There are no visible cracks or restorations.
