Bruno Mathsson bookshelf
The bookshelf features a tall, open structure composed of five horizontal wooden shelves, a narrow upper shelf and a larger angled lower shelf designed for displaying books, magazines or other printed material. The shelves are supported by a series of distinctive curved birch brackets, arranged vertically along both sides of the construction. These sculptural supports form a rhythmic, almost zigzag pattern, introducing a sense of movement and visual lightness to the otherwise rectilinear composition.
The construction is anchored by two vertical white lacquered metal uprights, connected at the bottom by a horizontal wooden element. The combination of natural wood and painted metal creates a subtle contrast between warm organic materials and the more industrial character of the structural framework. The shelves display pronounced pine grain, while the gracefully bent birch supports demonstrate the careful attention to material and construction associated with Mathsson’s furniture designs.
Bruno Mathsson was one of Sweden’s most influential twentieth-century furniture designers, internationally recognized for his pioneering approach to ergonomics, functionalism and modern furniture construction. Born in Värnamo into a family of cabinetmakers, Mathsson developed an experimental design philosophy centered on the relationship between the human body, natural materials and everyday living. His work became particularly celebrated for its innovative use of laminated and bent wood, as well as its light, open structures that challenged conventional furniture construction.
During the mid-twentieth century, Mathsson’s designs reflected the broader development of Scandinavian modernism, in which functionality, craftsmanship and material honesty were central principles. His furniture often combined technically sophisticated construction methods with an understated visual language, creating objects that were both practical and architecturally expressive. This bookshelf demonstrates these qualities through its repeated bentwood brackets, open shelving arrangement and economical use of materials.
Particularly distinctive is the interplay between the thin horizontal shelves and the curved supporting elements. The repeated brackets create a continuous visual rhythm, while the absence of solid side panels or a conventional back allows the bookshelf to retain an unusually light appearance despite its substantial height. The larger angled shelf at the bottom introduces an additional functional dimension, making the piece suitable for displaying publications alongside books and decorative objects.
The underside of the lower shelf bears the manufacturer’s stamp reading “BRUNO MATHSSON” and “MADE IN VÄRNAMO – SWEDEN” together with additional production markings. The stamp provides an important connection to the original manufacturing history of the piece.
The bookshelf measures 124 cm in width, 39 cm in depth and 215 cm in height (approximately 48.82 × 15.35 × 84.65 inches).
The piece remains in good vintage condition, with signs of use, minor surface scratches, small marks and age-related wear to the wooden surfaces and white lacquered metal elements. The wood has developed a warm, attractive patina over time, emphasizing its natural grain and character. The visible construction details, bentwood supports and shelving elements remain well preserved, contributing to the authentic appearance of this rare example of Swedish mid-century furniture design.
