Information

This rare daybed model Berlin was designed by Bruno Mathsson and produced by Karl Mathsson in Värnamo, Sweden, in 1962. The frame is made of beech, showing the refined joinery and sculptural leg design characteristic of Mathsson’s organic modernism. The gently curved form of the frame is complemented by the original fabric upholstery, accented with leather-covered buttons that emphasize the tufting pattern.

Mathsson, a leading figure in Swedish modern design, was known for combining ergonomic principles with elegant craftsmanship. The Berlin model was first presented at the International Building Exhibition in Berlin in 1957, where it was praised for its balance of comfort, lightness, and architectural presence. Karl Mathsson’s workshop in Värnamo produced the piece with the precision and quality that defined Swedish mid-century furniture production.

The daybed is in good vintage condition, with signs of usage and patina consistent with age, including wear to the beech frame and some fading to the fabric. These elements contribute to its authenticity and historical character.

Dimensions: width 96 cm (37.8 in), depth 195 cm (76.8 in), height 47 cm (18.5 in).
