Bruno Mathsson dining table
This very rare and early “Maria flap” dining table was designed by Bruno Mathsson in 1936 and produced by Karl Mathsson in Värnamo, Sweden. This particular example is a first edition, identifiable by its original brass locking mechanisms and hardware, which were later replaced by simplified fittings in subsequent versions. The table is crafted from solid ash and beech, with brass details incorporated into the folding mechanism.
The Maria table is a drop-leaf gateleg design featuring two wide folding leaves and a central fixed panel, allowing for versatile configurations. It transforms from a compact console measuring just 23 cm in width to a fully extended dining surface stretching 278 cm. The central section and leaves are supported by eight pivoting gate legs, reinforced with cross braces for added stability.
Bruno Mathsson, one of Sweden’s most influential 20th-century designers, is known for his functionalist yet humanistic furniture designs. The Maria table, one of his earliest creations, reflects his interest in modernist space-saving solutions, ergonomics, and modular living. Produced by his father’s workshop, Karl Mathsson, these early editions carry significant historical and design value due to their limited production and handcrafted construction.
The tabletop features strong, dynamic ash grain with clear cathedral figuring and warm tones, finished with a satin lacquer. The structure is made from lighter-toned beech, providing a subtle contrast. The brass locks and hinges have developed a natural patina but remain fully functional. The underside bears early Karl Mathsson paper labels and a hand-marked signature.
The table is in excellent condition, having undergone recent professional restoration that preserves the original wood character while addressing any structural wear. All joints and folding mechanisms are stable and operate smoothly.
When closed, the table measures 23 cm wide, 89.5 cm deep, and 73.5 cm high (approximately 9 by 35.2 by 28.9 inches). Fully extended, it reaches 278 cm in width (approximately 109.4 inches). The Maria table exemplifies early Scandinavian functionalism and holds an important place in modern furniture history.
