Carl-Axel Acking attrib. plant table
This rare freestanding plant stand or side table, attributed to Carl-Axel Acking, was produced in Sweden during the 1940s. It reflects refined mid-century Scandinavian design sensibilities, characterized by elegant proportions, a thoughtful combination of fine materials, and architectural construction.
The structure is crafted from solid mahogany, presenting a warm tone with a natural luster and visible grain, which has been preserved with a light patina over time. The upper section features an elongated oval basket, framed by rounded solid mahogany rails. Interlacing brass rods form a rhythmic diamond lattice, creating a semi-transparent enclosure that balances visual openness with structural definition. The diagonal pattern of the brass is tight and consistent, demonstrating precision metalwork and a clear sense of symmetry.
Inside the frame sits a removable blue-lacquered metal container, which shows signs of age and wear. The lacquer finish is matte, with areas of patina and chipped surfaces, reflecting its utilitarian past. Despite the wear, the metal liner remains fully functional and adds to the authenticity of the piece as a practical object from the period.
The stand is supported by four square-tapered mahogany legs, joined by a perimeter stretcher that enhances both rigidity and visual coherence. The joinery is meticulously executed, with subtle molding at the transitions, emphasizing both durability and aesthetic balance. The design achieves a harmonious interplay between solid and open forms, warm wood and cool metal, and geometric structure combined with organic function.
Carl-Axel Acking (1910–2001) was a prominent Swedish architect and designer known for his contributions to modern Scandinavian furniture and interior design in the mid-20th century. His work is marked by a deep understanding of materials and a focus on functional elegance. Though not all of his pieces were extensively documented, items attributed to him often showcase a considered combination of structure, rhythm, and practical grace, much like this plant stand.
The dimensions of the piece are 100 cm in width, 28 cm in depth, and 63 cm in height (approximately 39.4 x 11 x 24.8 inches). The stand remains in good vintage condition, with signs of use consistent with age, further enhancing its historical authenticity. This piece is a fine example of Acking’s design ethos, offering both beauty and practicality in a harmonious and timeless form.
