Carl-Axel Acking bedside tables
This very rare pair of bedside tables was designed by Swedish architect and designer Carl-Axel Acking and produced by Bodafors in Sweden during the 1940s. Acking, a key figure in Swedish functionalism, was known for his restrained and precise approach, balancing utility with refined proportions. His designs often reflect the ideals of the Swedish Modern movement, with an emphasis on craftsmanship, high-quality materials, and subtle decorative detailing.
The tables are crafted in mahogany with drawer interiors and structural elements in beech, complemented by brass hardware. Each table is raised on slender, tapered legs connected by crossed stretchers, a detail that not only stabilizes the design but also adds visual refinement. The tables feature two drawers with simple brass handles, together with an integrated magazine holder on the side, a functional element that reflects the multi-use tendencies of Swedish furniture from this period. The combination of warm-toned mahogany and brass detailing highlights the elegance typical of mid-20th century Scandinavian design.
These pieces remain in good vintage condition with signs of usage and patina consistent with age. The surface shows minor wear, and the brass handles display oxidation that enriches the authenticity and character of the pair. The craftsmanship of Bodafors, one of Sweden’s leading furniture manufacturers of the 20th century, is evident in the precision of the joinery and the subtle shaping of the details.
Representing the Swedish mid-century idiom, these tables embody both the functionalist ethos and a distinctly Scandinavian sensitivity to material and form. Their rarity enhances their historical value, as they showcase the collaboration between a prominent Swedish designer and one of the country’s most respected producers.
