Carl-Axel Acking cabinet
This freestanding cabinet, designed by Carl-Axel Acking and produced in Sweden during the 1940s, represents a rare example of early mid-century Scandinavian craftsmanship. Crafted from teak, the cabinet features a refined wood grain with warm, golden-brown tones, enhanced by the vertical symmetry of the veneer on the front doors. It stands on slender, tapered legs connected by an angular cross-stretcher, which provides stability while maintaining a light and elegant silhouette.
The upper section of the cabinet includes two doors that open to reveal a well-organized interior with adjustable shelving and pull-out trays, allowing for versatile storage. Below, three lockable drawers offer additional concealed space. The design is notably restrained, free from excessive ornamentation, embodying Acking’s philosophy of harmonizing functionality with balanced aesthetics.
Carl-Axel Acking was a distinguished Swedish architect and designer, renowned for his contributions to modernist Scandinavian design. His work is characterized by clean lines, structural clarity, and a synthesis of traditional craftsmanship with modernist ideals. This cabinet exemplifies those principles through its practical layout and understated sculptural form.
The cabinet is in well-preserved vintage condition, showing minor signs of age and use that enhance its authenticity. It measures 89.5 cm in width, 42.5 cm in depth, and 147.5 cm in height (35.2 x 16.7 x 58.1 inches).
