Carl-Axel Acking wall lamps
This wall lamp, model “5029”, is a sculptural example of Carl-Axel Acking’s innovative approach to lighting design in the 1940s. The lamp features a gently contoured reflector crafted from white lacquered brass. The reflector has a distinctive organic form, bordered by a fine brass edge that accentuates its soft, flowing shape. The light source is housed in a conical shade made from perforated brass, positioned below the reflector and connected by an elegantly curved arm, also in brass. The combination of materials gives the lamp a warm, aged brass tone complemented by the crisp white surface of the reflector.
The lamp exhibits traces of its age and original use, with visible patina and surface wear to the brass components, consistent with its vintage condition. The lacquered reflector remains in well-preserved condition with minor signs of use. The perforations in the shade contribute to the diffusion of light, creating subtle decorative effects when the lamp is illuminated. Overall, the lamp retains its original components and structure, reflecting careful use and maintenance over the decades.
Carl-Axel Acking (1910–2001) was a prominent Swedish architect and designer, recognized for his functional and human-centered design philosophy. Active during Sweden’s mid-century modern movement, Acking applied architectural principles to his lighting designs, focusing on both form and function. His work, often characterized by refined simplicity and expressive forms, contributed to shaping Scandinavian modernism in the post-war period. Acking’s designs range from furniture and lighting to architectural projects, all reflecting his pursuit of thoughtful, utilitarian beauty.
