Carl-Einar Borgström candlesticks

A rare pair of Art Deco candlesticks designed by Carl-Einar Borgström and produced by Ystad Tenn in Sweden in 1936. With their pure geometric forms and restrained elegance, these sculptural candlesticks exemplify the refined Scandinavian interpretation of Art Deco and represent one of Borgström’s most distinctive pewter designs.

Expertly crafted in pewter, each candlestick is composed of a hemispherical base supporting a slender cylindrical candle holder, separated by a finely proportioned circular drip tray. The interplay of simple volumes creates a harmonious architectural silhouette, demonstrating Borgström’s remarkable ability to balance functional design with sculptural clarity. Their understated form allows the soft grey tone of the pewter and its naturally developed patina to become an integral part of the aesthetic.

Carl-Einar Borgström was one of Sweden’s leading designers working with Ystad Tenn, where he helped establish the company as one of the foremost producers of high-quality pewter objects during the 1930s and 1940s. Each candlestick bears the impressed Ystad Tenn maker’s mark together with the Swedish pewter hallmarks and the date code for 1936, confirming their early production.

The candlesticks each measure 15 cm in diameter and 13 cm in height (approximately 5.9 × 5.1 inches).

Both remain in good vintage condition, displaying gentle signs of age and use together with a beautiful, naturally developed patina that enhances their authentic character. An increasingly rare pair that makes an elegant addition to any collection of Scandinavian Art Deco design.
