Carl Malmsten benches
This is a rare pair of benches, model Visingsö, designed by Swedish architect and furniture designer Carl Malmsten and produced by Svensk Fur in Sweden during the 1950s. Executed in solid pine, the benches reflect the rustic yet refined qualities of Malmsten’s work, showcasing a distinctly Scandinavian approach to functional and expressive wood furniture.
The design is based on simple geometric proportions with a rectangular seat surface supported by four round-tapered, slightly splayed legs. The construction emphasizes natural materials and traditional joinery, with visible wooden pegs securing the legs to the seat. The seat edges are softened and subtly rounded, and the pine wood exhibits a golden hue with visible growth rings and fine straight grain patterns. The surface is finished in a natural oil or lacquer that highlights the wood’s organic character while maintaining a tactile, matte finish.
Carl Malmsten was a leading proponent of Swedish craftsmanship and design in the 20th century, known for his opposition to strict functionalism in favor of a more humanistic and craft-oriented approach. The Visingsö series was originally designed in the 1950s for the Swedish National Railway and embodies Malmsten’s philosophy of simplicity, durability, and sensitivity to material. The use of Swedish pine and honest construction methods connects the design to both historical Swedish vernacular traditions and the emerging modernist movement.
The benches are in good vintage condition, showing small signs of use including surface wear and slight aging to the finish, consistent with careful handling over time. The structural integrity remains intact, and the patina adds to the authenticity of the pieces.
Each bench measures 90 cm in width, 39.5 cm in depth, and 43 cm in height. In imperial units, these dimensions correspond to approximately 35.4 inches wide, 15.6 inches deep, and 16.9 inches high. These benches are exemplary of mid-century Scandinavian rustic modernism, combining artisan values with functional design principles.
