Information

This rare desk, designed by Carl Malmsten and produced by Nordiska Kompaniet in Sweden during the 1930s, is a refined example of Swedish Art Deco craftsmanship and design. Created during a period when Malmsten was transitioning from the ornamental influences of National Romanticism to a more modernist but still classically grounded idiom, the desk embodies a subtle balance of decorative detailing and structural clarity.

Constructed from solid birch, the desk’s surface and main body feature a warm, honey-toned grain that has developed a rich patina over time. Contrasting black lacquered details—most notably along the drawer edges and structural framing—highlight the geometric precision of the composition and contribute to the bold graphic quality associated with Scandinavian interpretations of the Art Deco style. The overall design maintains a disciplined symmetry, with a rectangular top and evenly spaced drawer fronts that emphasize order and proportion.

Supporting the desk are finely turned legs that taper subtly towards the base, adding a touch of classical softness to the otherwise clean linear form. The drawers, integrated seamlessly into the front elevation, feature custom-designed handles and keyhole escutcheons, likely brass, reflecting Malmsten’s emphasis on craftsmanship and bespoke detailing. These elements also underscore the desk’s dual function as a utilitarian object and a work of decorative art.

Carl Malmsten (1888–1972) was one of Sweden’s most influential furniture designers, known for his dedication to traditional cabinetmaking and a deep belief in the integration of beauty and function. His work frequently merged historical Swedish furniture idioms with modern needs and materials, and his collaboration with Nordiska Kompaniet in the early decades of the 20th century produced some of the era’s most refined and enduring furniture designs.

This piece remains in excellent vintage condition. The birch surface shows only minor signs of use, consistent with its age, and retains both its visual clarity and tactile warmth. The structure is solid, and the functional elements—including drawers and locks—remain well-preserved and operational.

The desk measures 149 cm in width, 76 cm in depth, and 75.5 cm in height, which corresponds to approximately 58.7 inches wide, 29.9 inches deep, and 29.7 inches high.
