Information

This very rare “Sörgården” dining table, designed in 1965 by Carl Malmsten and produced in Sweden, is executed entirely in solid Scandinavian pine. The tabletop is formed from closely matched planks, their warm golden-yellow tones enlivened by the wood’s pronounced linear grain and occasional knots. The gently curved oval shape, with ends softly rounded rather than sharply angled, creates an inviting, organic silhouette that emphasizes the natural character of the pine.

Beneath the top, the table is supported by a dual trestle base composed of two sets of three legs, linked by horizontal stretchers. Each leg is subtly tapered toward its foot and chamfered along its edges, giving the underframe a sense of visual lightness despite its sturdy construction. Traditional pegged joints and square wooden dowels remain clearly visible at every intersection, celebrating the artisanal craftsmanship that is central to Malmsten’s philosophy. The stretcher assembly not only reinforces structural stability but also introduces a rhythmic interplay of vertical and horizontal elements.

Condition is very good for a piece of its age, with surface wear confined to light scratches and gentle color variations on the tabletop—patina consistent with decades of use rather than damage. The legs and stretchers retain crisp edges, and no significant warping or checking is present. The finish, likely a hardwax oil applied to protect the pine, remains even and original, preserving the wood’s tactile warmth and slight luster.

Carl Malmsten (1888–1972) was a champion of humanistic design and traditional Swedish handcraft. His work consistently sought to harmonize form, function, and material honesty. The “Sörgården” table was conceived for a folk high school environment, reflecting his commitment to creating furniture that fostered communal gathering and connection to local materials. Malmsten’s emphasis on exposed joinery and native woods positioned him as a pivotal figure in mid-century Scandinavian design, standing in deliberate contrast to industrialized production methods.

This example of the Sörgården table remains a distinguished representation of Malmsten’s late work, where practical simplicity and regional aesthetics converge. Its generous dimensions—267 cm long, 100 cm wide, and 73.5 cm high—make it ideally suited for large gatherings, while its refined construction and honest expression of pine speak to the enduring values of Swedish mid-century craftsmanship.
