Carl Malmsten table

The rare table model Berg, designed by Carl Malmsten and produced in Sweden, exemplifies the refined sensibility and artisanal craftsmanship that define Malmsten’s work. The circular tabletop is crafted from richly figured birch root, also known as burl birch, a material prized for its complex grain structure and organic visual texture. The surface is polished to a subtle sheen, enhancing the interplay of swirling patterns and warm amber tones inherent in the wood. This intricate natural motif adds depth and character, making the tabletop not only a functional surface but also a decorative focal point. The edge is gently rounded, reinforcing the softness of the overall form.

The base is constructed from mahogany and designed as a tripod with three gracefully curved legs. Each leg arcs outward in a fluid motion and ends in a rounded foot, contributing to both stability and visual balance. Carl Malmsten (1888–1972) was one of Sweden’s most celebrated furniture designers, known for his commitment to craftsmanship, natural materials, and a humanistic approach to design. His work resisted the industrial modernism of his time in favor of finely made, hand-finished pieces that emphasized warmth, familiarity, and Swedish craft tradition.
