Information

This flat-weave wool carpet was produced in Sweden during the mid-20th century by an unknown designer. Woven using the traditional kilim technique, the rug features a symmetrical pattern of stylized chevron-like motifs arranged in alternating rows across a warm ochre-brown field. The color palette includes navy blue, forest green, rust brown, salmon pink, cream, and burnt orange, configured in stepped geometric formations that reflect Scandinavian folk-influenced textile design. Each motif is mirrored and oriented vertically, creating a rhythmic repetition along the carpet’s central axis.

The rug is bordered on the short ends by dark brown and navy bands, finished with hand-knotted fringes made from undyed cotton. These fringes show signs of wear and some loss consistent with age and use, but the structural integrity of the carpet remains intact. The wool fibers retain a soft yet firm texture, with natural tonal variations resulting from the hand-dyeing process.

Though the designer remains unidentified, the style and weaving technique indicate production linked to the Swedish craft movement from the 1940s to 1960s. During this period, small workshops and local weavers created high-quality rugs and textiles often inspired by abstracted natural and folkloric themes. These works served both functional domestic purposes and aligned with the aesthetic ideals of modern Scandinavian interiors.

The carpet is in good vintage condition overall, showing moderate signs of use primarily along the fringes.

Dimensions measure 185 cm in width and 140 cm in depth (approximately 72.8 by 55.1 inches).
